    Moving Tips

    Moving Tips

After all the searching and stress you’ve finally found your dream home! This is the start of a new chapter in your life in a living space that’s all yours.

Before settling in there is the final big task of moving your belongings into your new space. Packing, organizing, hiring moving trucks, and getting everything just the way you want takes time and patience. The good news is that with a little bit of planning and a few smart strategies, your move can be smooth and stress free.

    Start Planning Early

One of the most common moving mistakes people make is leaving things to the last minute which can needlessly increase stress. A move is a major undertaking which requires a well thought out plan. Ideally, you want to start preparing about six to eight weeks before your move-in date so you have plenty of time to declutter, organize, and coordinate logistics such as hiring movers or organizing trailers/trucks.

Establish a moving timeline with goals of when you would like to have certain steps accomplished by. An example of a moving timeline could be as simple as:

    • 8 Weeks Out: Focus on researching and booking movers as well as coordinating truck rentals. This is also a great time to begin to gather boxes and packing supplies to ensure you have enough.
    • 6 Weeks Out: Start decluttering your home by selling or donating any items you no longer need. This will make things less daunting once you’re able to narrow down the essentials.
    • 4 Weeks Out: This is a great time to begin packing any non essentials as well as labeling boxes. This is an ideal time to tackle things like extra dishes, extra clothing, books or anything else you won’t be needing before you move out.
    • 2 Weeks Out: Notify any service provides and update your address. Make sure to change over any billing, mail, etc. to your new address. Confirm your move-in date with Tamarack and any additional closing details.
    • 1 Week Out: Begin packing the rest of your items and essentials. Give your home one final clean and sweep and confirm any moving day arrangements.

Make Sure To Update Any Important Account Information

Before moving day make a list of all the services and institutions that require an updated address.

    Important Steps To Take:

    • Transfer Utilities: Contact electricity, gas, and water providers to schedule your disconnection and reconnection dates ahead of time.
    • Set Up Internet and Cable: Book your installation ahead of time as appointments often fill up quickly.
    • Change Your Address: Notify Canada Post, banks, insurance companies, credit card providers, etc. You can also update your driver’s license and health card info through ServiceOntario’s online system.
    • Update Online Accounts: Don’t forget about things such as streaming services, Amazon, and any other online subscriptions such as grocery deliveries.

Having utilities up and running and your address updated ahead of time helps to ensure a seamless transition when you move into your new home.

    Prepare for Moving Day

Moving day can be long and hectic but proper preparation helps everything go smoothly.

A few days before the move you should:

    • Confirm Movers: Double check arrival time for movers and trucks, check truck sizes, and insurance details.
    • Clear Driveways and Entrances: Make sure movers have easy access to efficiently move items.
    • Pack Valuables Separately: Keep important documents, jewelry, and smaller electronics with you rather than in the back of a moving truck.
    • Final Meter Readings: Take a quick photograph of your utility meters in your old home for your records.

    On moving day:

    • Have snacks as well as water or a cooler of drinks easily accessible.
    • Keep cleaning supplies handy for any list minute cleanups
    • Do a final walkthrough of your home to make sure you left nothing behind
    • Ensure you’re present during loading and unloading to answer any questions the movers may have.

If you’re moving into a Tamarack community, your site team or a Tamarack sales representative can confirm when keys will be ready as well as provide any other useful community specific info.

    Unpacking and Settling In

Once you’ve arrived it’s time to start the process of unpacking and making yourself feel at home. Prioritize key spaces in your home such as:

    • Bedrooms: Set up bedrooms to ensure you have a comfortable space to sleep after a long day of moving.
    • Bathroom: Unpack and toiletries, towels, and shower essentials.
    • Kitchen: Set up basic cookware and appliances so you can prepare some meals.
    • Living Areas: Position furniture and unpack any entertainment or comfort items.

Take your time organizing and decorating your new home. One of the joys of home ownership is truly making the space yours.

    Moving With Kids Or Pets

Moving isn’t only stressful for adults but for children and pets as well and a little extra planning can make a world of difference.

    For Children:

    • Talk about the move with them and involve them in small tasks such as packing their toys and clothes.
    • Visit the neighbourhood beforehand if at all possible so they can get a feel for their new community. Allow them to help unpack their room first so they can get settled and decompress right away.

    For Pets:

    • Keep pets in a quiet room or with a sitter while you set up to reduce their stress.
    • Update their ID tags and information with your new address.
    • Set up a familiar bed, toys and the food area in your home as soon as possible to allow them to start settling in.
